by I think it looks okay. My only problem with it is the Red Sonic in co-op mode.

Well after reading this article HERE It seems in my opinion that they HAD to make co-op with a recolored sonic. I say they had to do it for story purposes, maybe being that maybe sonic won't always be with someone in some missions... so they added a "clone" 
but at least i'm happy they put co-op in a sonic game...

It's easier to just have another sonic in a different color so the players can easily tell who is which (just like SSBB)
Also among reading the article, it looks as if you'll be controlling these sonic robots in coop, and going back i remember reading some talk about this extra planet shaped as a robot sonic head...

Tails didn't have his flying abilities in Sonic 2 (well except when he'd try to catch up to Sonic, but you couldn't use them in game when you controlled him like in Sonic 3), and I think for two player mode they could accommodate him. Even if you couldn't use his flying abilities, which would kind of defeat the purpose of having Tails in a way, I rather play a non-flying Tails than a Sonic recolor.
Sounds like sheer laziness to me.
If storyline is the reason, you see Tails in the advertisement, so he's in the game somewhere even if it's not playable. They could at least make him playable in two player mode instead of a cheesy recolor. They had characters playable in SA2's two player mode that weren't playable in the story.
Of course, I've seen this done in fighting games, where they change the outfits of the fighters so two players could play the same character. But still, I actually LIKE having a variety of characters to play, instead of just one. To me, this really sounds like a cop out on Sega's part.
